I signed a lease today. It’s a big step, and a necessary one. It’s a small space, though, and it makes my business model all the more important. I firmly believe that some purchases need to include a brick and mortar element, sporting goods among them. Rafts, oars, frame components, dry boxes, coolers, and the like are just too big to ship cost effectively per piece. And drysuits, splash gear, and helmets really need to be fitted before purchase to be safe and effective. So I might have a digital front door, but the loading dock and the dressing room need to be available in person.
Tiny space means a well thought out layout and an efficient supply chain. Probably not going to have a lot of colorways. Probably going to have a lot of back stock warehoused off site. Probably going to need to look at how I can use vertical space to show stuff off instead of spreading it out. And probably get supplier help in staggering shipments to sell enough to meet demand while not getting buried in a literal stockpile.
